Upward from the North

This sculpture was donated to Lakehead University by the first graduating class of engineering in 1974. It is entitled “Upward From the North”, by John Duncanson.

It’s situated in the Agora, along those crazy stairs to the upper lecture theatre that you can neither walk nor run up without breaking your step. Rumor has it that the dean of the time had them built so he could ride his horse up and down them, but so far this has not been substantiated.

Big Thunder was constructed in ‘72, which leads one to believe it was the same group responsible for this, in ‘74. What a great bunch of engineering students! Check out the picture of the plaque. If you think class sizes are smallish now, look at the class sizes back then!
